Four Years In: A Few Lessons Learned Along the Way at CFHY

Today marks the four-year anniversary of CrossFit Hyannis.  It’s hard to believe that it’s been four years since we first opened our doors and began this adventure.  We’ve had hundreds of people walk through the door and train with us and be part of our community.  Some have been here since day one- brave souls who showed up on the first day ready to see what CrossFit was about and four years later have still decided to stick around.  We’ve had countless visitors from around the world who drop in with us to train while on vacation- it’s always great to have people join our community while they’re on the Cape and it’s amazing to see the CrossFit community alive and well throughout the world.  And we have an amazing community of Cape Codders who show up daily to train and better themselves here at CrossFit Hyannis.

As we complete our fourth year I can’t help but recognize that a full phase in our education system is often four years- in both high school and college we enter as a freshman eager to learn and begin a new phase in our life, and over the course of four years we learn invaluable lessons as we encounter various people, teachings, and experiences that aid in our knowledge.

Four years into CrossFit Hyannis there certainly have been many lessons learned.  Many of these have been specific to training methodologies and CrossFit training in general, but many more have been lessons that transfer into everyday life.  Below are a few of the lessons gleaned over thousands of hours spent at CrossFit Hyannis.

  1. Community is everything. It is the community that binds us and brings us back each day.  A shared sense of both suffering and joy leads to a community forged in sweat and built for whatever comes our way.
  2. There are no shortcuts. If you want something you have to work for it; it’s the struggles that make the victories that much sweeter.
  3. You have to show up. Consistently and ready to work.  Even if from day to day it may not appear that progress is being made, when we look back it’s clear to see that working to become just a little better each day leads to great progress in the long term.  It’s when you seem like you’re stuck in a plateau that it’s most important to keep showing up, a breakthrough is likely right around the corner.
  4. Sometimes we wander away or get off track but you can always come back. It can be intimidating to return, but know that walking through the door again will likely be the hardest part.
  5. When you feel like you can’t keep going, just keep moving. You can always push a little harder, and you are strong enough to keep going.
  6. Strength, confidence, and belief in yourself can take you a long way. Self doubt is normal, although it’s important to acknowledge it- do not let it hinder you along the way.
  7. Share your gifts and knowledge with those around you. CrossFit is built on an open source model- share the information you have and work to build those around you up.  When one member gets stronger, we all get stronger.
  8. You don’t have to go it alone, know that others are there to lift you up when you most need it. Let them.
  9. Celebrate.  Celebrate your own accomplishments and the victories of others.  Celebrate your growth and your progress.  Celebrate the day to day grind and embrace the journey.
  10. Better every day makes today the best day ever. Every day brings with it new challenges and opportunities.  It’s important and necessary to reflect on the past, but the real excitement lies in thinking about and working today towards a better tomorrow.  Live each day with passion, vigor and and indomitable spirit.

Undoubtedly the best part of the last four years has been the relationships made and witnessing the immense physical and personal growth of our members.  As 2015 comes to a close and we look to embark on a new year the CrossFit Hyannis community takes with it these lessons learned and looks forward to more personal and community victories in 2016 and beyond.

Thanks to all who have walked through the doors of CrossFit Hyannis and been part of this amazing community.  Here’s to what’s to come!
